GM’s Swedish counterpart has been considering the possibility (and feasibility) of adding an entry-level premium model to compete against the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the recent Volvo C30, for quite a while now. Even though Saab hasn’t announced something official, Brit magazine Autocar is supporting that the Swedish carmaker will take the wraps off a prototype version of the car dubbed “9-1” at next July’s London Motor Show. The Brits also suggest that the production version will go on sale during the second half of 2009. -Continued
We can’t verify the dates, but we’re more than sure that if Saab proceeds to the creation of the 9-1, it will be based on GM’s front-wheel-drive Delta platform (Opel / Saturn Astra). No one can say with certainty what the car will look like, but to be frank, we wouldn’t mind if Saab designers drew their inspiration from the 9X concept (pictures) which still looks as fresh as it did in 2001 when it made its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
